This article explains why cashback may change, disappear, or be deducted from your KAST Rewards balance after a transaction is refunded, reversed, cancelled, or adjusted.
What Is a Cashback Clawback?
A cashback clawback is when cashback that was previously credited for a transaction is removed or adjusted.
This can happen when the original transaction no longer qualifies for cashback. For example, if a purchase is refunded, reversed, cancelled, or charged back, the cashback linked to that purchase may also be reversed.
In simple terms: if the purchase that earned cashback is reduced or removed, the related cashback may be reduced or removed too.
Why Did My Cashback Change or Disappear?
Your cashback may change or disappear if the original transaction was later updated in a way that affects eligibility.
Common reasons include:
- The merchant refunded the purchase.
- The transaction was cancelled or reversed.
- The purchase amount changed after authorization.
- You received a partial refund.
- The transaction was disputed or charged back.
- The transaction no longer met the applicable rewards eligibility rules.
If only part of a purchase is refunded, only the cashback linked to the refunded amount may be deducted. This is sometimes called a pro-rated clawback.
Example: Full Refund
Let’s say you make an eligible purchase and earn cashback.
If that purchase is later fully refunded, the cashback earned from that purchase may be removed from your Rewards balance.
Example: Partial Refund
Let’s say you make an eligible purchase for $100 and earn cashback on that amount.
If the merchant later refunds $40 of the purchase, the cashback linked to the refunded portion may be deducted. The cashback linked to the remaining eligible amount may stay in your Rewards balance, subject to the applicable rewards rules.
Where Is the Clawback Taken From?
If cashback needs to be reversed, KAST will typically deduct it from your Rewards balance first.
This may include your:
- Locked rewards
- Redeemable rewards
- Other available rewards balance, where applicable
If your Rewards balance does not have enough cashback available because you already redeemed and spent it, the remaining amount may be deducted from your main KAST spending balance.
What If I Already Redeemed and Spent the Cashback?
If you already redeemed and used cashback from a transaction that is later refunded or reversed, KAST may still need to recover the cashback linked to that transaction.
In that case, KAST may:
- Deduct the available amount from your Rewards balance first.
- Deduct any remaining shortfall from your main KAST spending balance, where applicable.
This is why your spending balance may appear lower after a refund or reversal.
Can My Rewards Balance Go Negative?
In some cases, your Rewards balance may show a lower balance than expected after a clawback.
If there are not enough rewards available to cover the clawback, the adjustment may reduce your available rewards and may affect future rewards until the shortfall is covered.
Future eligible cashback may help offset the adjustment, depending on your account status and the applicable rewards rules.
Does a Refund Always Remove Cashback?
If a transaction that earned cashback is refunded or reversed, the related cashback may be removed.
The exact adjustment depends on the transaction, the refund amount, and the applicable rewards program rules. For example:
- A full refund may result in the full related cashback being removed.
- A partial refund may result in only part of the related cashback being removed.
- A transaction that remains eligible after adjustment may keep the cashback linked to the eligible amount.
How Can I Confirm What Happened?
If your cashback changed or disappeared, check the original transaction first.
|
|
|
|
3. Check whether the transaction was refunded, reversed, cancelled, disputed, or adjusted. |
|
|
4. Review your Rewards activity, if available. |
|
|
5. Compare the cashback change with the transaction amount or refund amount. |
If you still do not recognize the adjustment, contact KAST Concierge and share:
- The transaction date
- The merchant name
- The transaction amount
- The refund or reversal amount, if shown
- A screenshot of the transaction details, if available
Why Did My Spending Balance Decrease After a Refund?
Your spending balance may decrease if cashback from the refunded transaction had already been redeemed and used.
For example:
- You make an eligible purchase and earn cashback.
- You redeem and spend that cashback.
- The original purchase is later refunded or reversed.
- KAST reverses the cashback linked to that purchase.
- If your Rewards balance is not enough to cover the reversal, the remaining amount may be deducted from your spending balance.
This adjustment is linked to the cashback earned from the original transaction, not an extra fee for receiving a refund.
How Can I Avoid Surprises?
To reduce confusion around cashback adjustments:
- Remember that cashback may change if the underlying transaction changes.
- Check whether a merchant refund or reversal has posted.
- Avoid assuming cashback is final while a transaction or refund is still being processed.
- Review the Rewards Program Terms and Conditions for the latest eligibility and adjustment rules.
